New Dataset - AHAA

Posted July 25th, 2005 by Jen Darragh in Add Health, Education

The Adolescent Health and Academic Achievement (AHAA) Study provides an opportunity to examine the effects of education on adolescent behavior, academic achievement, and cognitive and psychosocial development in the 1990s. It expands the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to include detailed measures of academic progress and high school curriculum. While Add Health is a rich source of data on social contexts and adolescent development, Add Health has limited information on the academic trajectories of youth. Thus, the AHAA study contributes to the Add Health by providing the high school transcripts of Add Health Wave III sample members.

For more information, please see the AHAA Website.

NAEP Releases 2004 Long Term Trend Results

Posted July 15th, 2005 by Jen Darragh in Education

Results from the 2004 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) long-term trend assessment were just released. This unique source of data reports on national trends in reading since 1971 and in mathematics since 1973.

Some results…

Nine-year-old students scored higher on average in both subjects in 2004 than in any previous assessment year.

Thirteen-year-old students scored higher in mathematics in 2004 than in any previous assessment year. Reading scores remain statisticallyunchanged from the last assessment in 1999.

Overall performance of 17-year-old students in both subjects remainedstatistically unchanged; however, Black and Hispanic student groups made progress in comparison to the first assessment year.

Many of the differences in achievement between Black or Hispanic students and their White counterparts have narrowed, as the average scores for minority student groups have increased over time.
