Today’s New York Times reports that sub-Saharan Africa is the only region in the world where the number of child workers is growing.

ACS 2005 On-line Data Products

The 2005 ACS guide includes a list of data products, a list of geographical areas for which data are available, and step-by-step instructions for accessing the data on the Census Bureau’s American FactFinder (AFF) site.
A similar user guide for the Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS) will be released in Spanish in the next few weeks.

NAEP: Charter vs. Public School - HLM analysis

Charter school mean scores in reading and mathematics were lower, on average, than those for traditional public schools. The NCES report uses HLMs to examine differences between the two types of schools.

NHANES Web-based Tutorial

This NCHS site offers step-by-step instructions for data retrieval and analysis, information about the database and the analysis technique required to properly analyze this complex dataset, and analytic nuances and sample program code.

This is the first phase of the tutorial. The targeted completion date for the entire tutorial is January 2007.

Secondary School Health Education

This CDC MMWR is based on the 2004 School Health Profiles Survey for public secondary schools. The report summarizes the results of the Survey, which indicated that in 2004, approximately one half to three fourths of schools in the participating states and school districts taught all 15 nutrition and dietary behavior topics. The topics are intended to encourage a healthful diet and to engage in physical activity.

Transdisciplinary health research

A new report from the Institute of Medicine calls for transdisciplinary research to better understand how genetic, social, and environmental factors affect health. The report includes recommendations for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and academic research centers to revise funding and reward mechanisms to encourage this kind of research.

Cuts likely at National Cancer Institute

The New York Times reports that the new head of the National Cancer Institute plans to phase out some programs because of budget shortfalls. Appointee Dr. John E. Niederhuber did not specify which programs might be phased out, but said that he intended to continue funding university cancer centers.
