High numbers of orphans in Zimbabwe

A UNICEF spokesman reported that Zimbabwe has the highest number of orphans per capita in the world, primarily due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic (kaisernetwork.org Daily HIV/AIDS Report).

More African women using condoms

An analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data from 18 African countries shows that more African women are using condoms (kaisernetwork.org Daily HIV/AIDS Report). The study is published in the November 18 issue of the Lancet.

Out-of-wedlock childbearing increases

According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) report Births: Preliminary Data for 2005, out-of-wedlock births are up, but the increase was driven by unmarried women in their 20’s and not teen mothers (CNN.com).

The Washington Post reviews two new books about highly educated women and families. The evidence examined by the authors shows that successful, highly educated women are more likely to get married and have children in wedlock and less likely to get divorced than their less educated counterparts.
