Nigerian population over 140 million

Posted January 3rd, 2007 by Tara Murray in Sub-Saharan Africa

The results of Nigeria’s March census have been tallied, and the National Population Commisssion says the total population is now over 140 million. This represents a 63% increase from the last census conducted in 1991.

Questions about religion and ethnicity were left out of the 2006 census to avoid the controversies that have caused previous census counts to be discarded. Data on other questions (education, occupation, income, size of house, type of water supply, toilet facilities, type of fuel used, and access to radio, television, telephone) as well as regional and local population counts have not yet been released.
