NIH pilots shortened review cycle for new investigator applications

The NIH is continuing its pilot of a shortened review cycle for new investigator R01 applications, allowing investigators to resubmit amended applications in consecutive review cycles. The pilot was begun in 2006 and NIH anticipates that it will be extended to all new investigator R01 applications by the end of 2007. For more information, see the Federal Register notice.

Released inmates face high death risk

A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that former inmates were much more likely than the general public to die during their first two weeks out of prison. Experts say released prisoners need more support to prevent recidivism and health risks. (AP via Centre Daily Times)

Religion and the Nigerian census

Due to problems and controversies in previous census-taking efforts, questions about religion and ethnicity were left out of the Nigerian census conducted in 2006. But according to BBC News, the proportion of the population in the country’s mainly Muslim northern states has remained about the same, demonstrating no change from the previous census.

How to borrow a book from the PRI Library

In order to borrow books (or CDs, DVDs, and journals) from the PRI Library, you must first be a registered user. To register, complete the PRI Library & Data Archive registration form.

Once you have registered, sign out materials using the card found in the back of the item. Then drop the card in the wooden box located near the center of the library.

Journals and reference books circulate for two weeks and may be renewed. All other items do not have due dates, but we will send you a list of items checked out to you at the end of each semester. Items may be recalled for other users.

After-hours access to the PRI Library

The PRI Library (707 Oswald Tower) is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The library is closed on holidays and whenever the university is closed.

However, demography students can get access to the library 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! For information on getting access, contact Tara Murray.
