Black-white life expectancy gap decreasing

A new study of trends in the black-white life expectancy gap, published in JAMA, finds that the gap has declined since 1993, but the authors say that further improvements will require more public health efforts. (Reuters via CNN)

Secondhand smoke may affect African American children differently

New research suggests that African American children may be affected differently than their white counterparts by exposure to tobacco smoke. The research is published in the March issue of Chest. (BBC News)

World Population Prospects 2006 data available

Summary tables and data from World Population Prospects: The 2006 Revision are now available online from the United Nations Population Division. According to the press release, the data show that the population continues to age, and that global population will reach 9 billion by 2050. In addition, the 2006 revision includes improved modeling on HIV/AIDS.

NIH Director’s Bridge Awards

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have announced the NIH Director’s Bridge Award (NDBA), which will provide limited continued funding to grantees submitting a competing renewal application in order to strengthen a revised application. Read more in the Federal Register notice.
