National Children’s Study research plan available for comment

The research plan for the first phase of the National Children’s Study (birth to 24 months) is now available for comment. Responses will be accepted until September 25, 2007.

The National Children’s Study “will examine the effects of environmental influences on the health and development of more than 100,000 children across the United States, following them from before birth until age 21. The goal of the study is to improve the health and well-being of children.”

Fertility and exchange rates

A new working paper from the National Bureau for Economic Research (NBER) examines the link between a country’s fertility rate and the real effective exchange rate, confirming the theory that a country with declining fertility “can be expected to have higher savings, lower investment, a current account surplus, and accordingly a real depreciation.” (Fertility and the Real Exchange Rate, by Andrew K. UN Millennium Development Goals Report 2007

A new report from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) says that rural students perform better in science than their rural counterparts (AP via Centre Daily Times). Status of Education in Rural America brings together data from NCES surveys and the American Community Survey (ACS).

Amnesty International: Zimbabwean women face abuse

NHANES: 2003-2004 Diet Supplement Records Added

NCHS has announced that the NHANES data set has added supplement records collected in the prescription medications section of the Sample Person questionnaire. These include prescription supplements and other items later determined to be supplements. The Questionnaire files have been updated on SodaPop and PopNet.
