Vietnam’s intensely family-oriented society is going through a “quiet” sexual revolution as young people move in together, have more premarital sex, and talk about love and relationships (Reuters).

African child soldiers need mental help

Child soldiers need help to overcome post-traumatic stress and reject revenge and accept reconciliation, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (BBC News). The researchers interviewed children who had been forced to fight in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Should low-risk research be deregulated?

Adil E. Shamoo calls for less strict regulation of low-risk human subjects research in a column in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Shamoo, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, says that current requirements create unnecessary roadblocks. Among the examples of low-risk research are social science surveys, interviews, and observations involving competent adult subjects that do not reveal personal information.
