MEPS: Errata Notice

MEPS has announced an Errata for all data housed at PRI.

The variable FOODCT04 should not be used because it is based on an invalid question in the survey instrument. This question asks “About how much did the family pay each month for food stamps?” when in fact, as of 1979, the food stamp program no longer maintained a purchase requirement. All responses are considered invalid.

Uninsured cancer patients fare worse

Cancer patients without health insurance are more likely to die, according to a new study forthcoming in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians (AP).

NPR focuses on emerging adulthood

NPR’s “Your Health” this morning focused on emerging adulthood. Read a transcript of the segment or listen at npr.org.

The story highlights the work of Larry Nelson at Brigham Young University, who surveyed college students and their parents and found that most of the parents did not consider their 18- to 26-year-old children adults.  His work is forthcoming in the Journal of Family Psychology.

PRB Discuss: Beyond 300 Million

Tomorrow the Population Reference Bureau will host an online discussion: “Beyond 300 Million: Regional and State Population Trends in the United States”. The discussion, led by Mark Mather, deputy director of Domestic Programs at PRB, will be Wed., Dec. 19, 2007, from 11 a.m. to noon (EST).

Commonwealth Fund report on health care costs

A new report from the Commonwealth Fund makes policy recommendations for reducing health care costs (Bending the Curve: Options for Achieving Savings and Improving Value in U.S. Health Spending).

New NCES report on Education Statistics

The National Center for Education Statistics has released a new report titled “Projections of Education Statistics to 2016″. This publication provides projections for key education statistics. It includes statistics on enrollment, graduates, teachers, and expenditures in elementary and secondary schools, and enrollment, earned degrees conferred, and current-fund expenditures of degree-granting institutions.
