Instructional Focus in First Grade

Posted March 10th, 2006 by Lisa Broniszewski in ECLS-K, Education

This brief uses data from the ECLS-K of 1998-1999 to examine how often per week and how much time per day first-graders were instructed in subjects such as reading, mathematics, and science. The brief also focuses in more detail on students’ in-class work on reading and language arts. The major findings of the brief are that more than 90 percent of first-graders received daily instruction in reading and mathematics, while the most common length of time spent per day on reading is more than 90 minutes and on mathematics is between 31 and 60 minutes. The most common reading or language arts activities used in first grade classrooms were working on phonics and instruction in capitalization and punctuation.

ECLS Kindergarten - Third Grade Longitudinal Data

Posted January 20th, 2006 by Jen Darragh in ECLS-K, SodaPop News

The ECLS-K kindergarten through third grade longitudinal file is now available on SodaPop.

While attempting to prepare these data for SodaPop, a PRI programmer discovered that the extraction software was not working properly on any of the CD-ROMs in the PRI Data Archive collection. A new CD-ROM with a later publication date was obtained, but the same problem occurred. The programmer contacted the ECLS project and received program files to fix the extraction error. Please note, however, that these file have to be installed by someone with administrator privileges. As the majority of departmental machines do not allow users that privilege level, it is recommended that users work with the SodaPop version of the file (full SAS dataset access on /home/sas_data and \\paris\sas_data - see the ECLS SodaPop Web page for full path to SAS library).
