ICPSR’s Gutmann to head NSF Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Directorate

Myron Gutmann, the University of Michigan historian who has directed the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) since 2001, has been appointed to head the National Science Foundation’s Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Directorate.

Gutmann’s research interests include historical population studies, especially relating population to agriculture, the environment, and health; digital preservation; and protecting the confidentiality of research subjects when data about them is made available for secondary use.

Gutmann’s appointment with NSF will begin November 2, 2009.  ICPSR will appoint an interim director and has been a search for permanent director.

NIH Public Access Policy: How to use the NIHMSID

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a notice clarifying the use of an NIHMSID to indicate compliance with the Public Access Policy.

An NIHMSID is intended to be a temporary substitute for a PMCID when an grantee needs to cite a paper so soon after its acceptance that the PubMed Central submission process cannot be completed. The NIH will not accept the NIHMSID more than 3 months after a paper is published.
