POPLINE restores abortion as search term

For a brief period, anyone who searched POPLINE using the search term “abortion” would get 0 results. Inquiries by concerned librarians revealed that POPLINE administrators at Johns Hopkins had made “abortion” a stop word after USAID, the reproductive health database’s funder, expressed concern about a few articles in the database. “Abortion” was quickly restored as a search term after numerous complaints.

NIH seeks comments on Public Access Policy implementation

Starting April 7, the new NIH Public Access Policy requires all final peer-reviewed manuscripts arising from NIH funds to be submitted to PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication.

The NIH is soliciting comments on the implementation of the policy. See the Request for Information to submit a comment or read those already submitted. Comments will be accepted until May 31.

NIH Public Access Policy effective April 7

The NIH Public Access Policy will take effect on April 7, 2008. As of that date, all articles arising from NIH funds must be submitted to PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication. Some journals will submit articles automatically, but for others authors must submit manuscripts to PubMed Central.

As of May 25, 2008, NIH applications, proposals, and progress reports must include the PubMed Central reference number when citing an article that falls under the policy and is authored or co-authored by the investigator, or arose from the investigatorâ€™s NIH award. This policy includes applications submitted to the NIH for the May 25, 2008 due date and subsequent due dates.

Journal Citation Reports

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is now available electronically to the Penn State community through University Libraries. This ISI resource provides journal rankings by field, including in demography.

The PRI Library provides an annotated list of bibliographic databases frequently used by demographers. Many more databases are available from the University Libraries web site.

Penn State Faculty Senate endorses CIC Statement on Publishing Agreements

The Penn State Faculty Senate on Tuesday voted to endorse the CIC Statement on Publishing Agreements. The statement is intended to ensure that faculty retain certain rights relevant to archiving, instructional use, and sharing with colleagues to advance discourse and discovery when publishing their work in scholarly journals.

The resolution, statement, and accompanying model publishing agreement addendum are available on the Faculty Senate agenda.

Faculty who are working on NIH-funded projects need to pay special attention to publishing agreements so that they can comply with NIH’s new Public Access Policy, which requires deposit of articles in PubMed Central within one year of publication.
