PRI Library Thanksgiving hours

The PRI Library (707 Oswald) will be closed Nov. 26 and 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday. We will be open normal hours Nov. 23-25.

If you have after-hours access to the library, you will be able to access the library as usual over the holiday. Please make sure you turn off the lights and lock both doors when you leave.

Scopus trial

Penn State University Libraries has trial access to Elsevier’s Scopus database, a competitor to ISI’s Web of Science, through the middle of August.

Poster design workshop added

Due to high demand, I’ve added a second poster design workshop to the PRI Workshop Series. This will be a hands-on workshop walking you through the basic steps of creating a poster. We’ll focus on using Illustrator, but I will be prepared to demonstrate in PowerPoint as well.

Most Taylor & Francis journals no longer available online

According to a blog post from Penn State’s Life Sciences Library, most Taylor & Francis journals are no longer available online to the Penn State community because Penn State could not reach a satisfactory licensing agreement with the publisher.

Population Studies: A Journal of Demography is still available online and in print in the PRI Library.

Request electronic copies of articles not available in Penn State’s collections through interlibrary loan.

Faculty and staff may also request electronic copies of articles available print in Penn State’s collections using the ILLiad system.

PRI associates and affiliates may also request an electronic copy of any article using our document request form.

NIH to step up public access policy compliance efforts

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that it will check applications, proposals, and progress reports to ensure compliance with the Public Access Policy that went into effect in April. From the NIH Extramural Nexus:

Starting this month, NIH will be stepping up its efforts to ensure compliance for the Public Access Policy as described in a recent NIH Guide Notice. To ensure compliance with the Public Access Policy, NIH Program Officials will check applications, proposals or progress reports to see if citations of papers appearing to fall under this policy include a PubMed Central Identifier or appropriate alternative. NIH staff will inform the Program Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs) via an email if citations appear out of compliance and will copy the Institutional Business Official on the email.

OECD.Stat Training

The Social Sciences Library is offering a workshop on OECD.Stat on Nov. 14.

Kathleen DeBoer, from the OECD Washington Office, will present a 2 hour, hands-on training session on using the statistical resource OECD.Stat. OECD.Stat enables users to search for and extract data from across OECD’s many databases included in SourceOECD Statistics.

NIH Public Access Policy reminders

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a reminder about the Public Access Policy, how investigators should demonstrate compliance, and how the NIH will monitor compliance.

Penn State University Libraries is offering training on the Public Access mandate this Thurs., Oct. 9.

The Population Research Institute also offers a guide to the policy for researchers.

University Libraries to offer NIH Public Access training

On Thursday, October 9, a training session will examine copyright issues leading to the Open Access movement and the NIH Public Access Mandate as well as provide an explanation of the manuscript submission process and an overview of the copyright addendum, approved by University counsel, to be used with a manuscript submission.

The presentation will also be broadcast on Media Site Live and accessible for 30 days.

Presenters include Marie FitzSimmons, reference librarian, and Esther Dell, reference and interlibrary loan librarian, from the George T. Harrell Library, Penn State Hershey.

Information Core workshops

The PRI Information Core is offering 2 workshops as part of the PRI Workshop Series this semester:

Locating Demographic Literature will introduce you to the bibliographic databases commonly used in demography and how to locate full text of papers.

Finding Demographic Data will show you how to locate and access secondary data for your research.
