New Web site provides quality of life indicators for US metropolitan areas

Diversitydata.org, a project of the Harvard School of Public Health, provides access to indicators of well-being for US metropolitan areas and racial and ethnic populations.

This resource has been added to the PRI Library Reference Links page, a list of online resources for population researchers.

Survey Research Methods online journal

The PRI Library has received an announcement from the European Survey Research Association for the publication of their online journal Survey Research Methods. How to borrow a book from the PRI Library

In order to borrow books (or CDs, DVDs, and journals) from the PRI Library, you must first be a registered user. To register, complete the PRI Library & Data Archive registration form.

Once you have registered, sign out materials using the card found in the back of the item. Then drop the card in the wooden box located near the center of the library.

Journals and reference books circulate for two weeks and may be renewed. All other items do not have due dates, but we will send you a list of items checked out to you at the end of each semester. Items may be recalled for other users.

After-hours access to the PRI Library

The PRI Library (707 Oswald Tower) is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The library is closed on holidays and whenever the university is closed.

However, demography students can get access to the library 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! For information on getting access, contact Tara Murray.

Demography Matters blog

Demography Matters is a blog written by demographers and other social scientists offering resources and commentary related to the implications of population aging. Just as with News from the PRI Library and Data Archive, you can subscribe to the blog’s feed to receive alerts when new content is posted.

Demographic Research

Demographic Research, the open access peer-reviewed journal published by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, has announced that it will begin publishing under a Creative Commons license October 1, 2006. Content will continue to be free to readers, and authors will be able to retain copyright under a new copyright policy.

The journal also announced that it will be indexed in full by the ISI Social Sciences Citation Index from 2005 on, and will be included in the Sociological Abstracts core journals collection from volume 1 (1999). Selected articles, especially those related to fertility, are indexed in other sources, such as Popline and PubMed.

Photoshare Photo Contest

Project INFO and Canon are sponsoring a photo contest at Photoshare. Photos of rural and urban life in developing countries can be submitted through November 10. The Photoshare project is designed to help non-profit organizations communicate global health and development issues through photography, and includes an online photo database.

Information Core staff out Sept. 1

Information Core staff will be out of the office Friday, September 1.

The PRI Library (707 Oswald) will be open normal hours on Friday, September 1. The library will be closed on Monday, September 4 for Labor Day. Anyone with ID card access to the library will be able to access the library any time.

To subscribe, browse through the information categories found to your right. Our news are organized by the parent categories: Data Archive, Library, and Subject Resources. When you have chosen one or more categories of interest, find the “Subscribe” heading (it is right above the category listing) and click on the “Subscribe to…” link pertaining to the categories you found (e.g. click on Subscribe to Data Archive News if you are interested in Data Archive Updates or the ECLS-B or News from Penn State’s ORP). On the subscribe page are some instructions on how you can sign up to receive news alerts.

The PRI Library and Data Archive Catalog is temporarily unavailable due to server maintenance. If you need assistance locating an item in our collections, please contact us at library@pop.psu.edu.

This outage includes only the catalog, used to locate books, bound journals, codebooks, and data on CD-ROM. It does not include SodaPop.

We will post an update when the catalog is available again.
